Wood carver

Komei Tanaka (Born 1987) has learned wood carving under Seiji Maekawa since 1976. He established Tomoru Studio in 2008 with his wife Sanae, the lacquer artist. In 2018, Komei had exihibitons in Hong Kong.

Lacquer Chopsticks

This workshop will introduce you to Japanese Urushi (lacquer) world. Most of the work here is to knead Urushi which is the most important process. It’s a rare experience to be able to work with an URUSHI master, so take an advantage of it!

Japanese Lacquer Artist

Sanae Tanaka has learned the art of Japanese lacquer under Yukifumi Yokoyama since 1997. She established Tomoru Studio in 2008 with his husband Komei, the wood carver. In 2018, Sanae had exihibitons in Hong Kong.

Wood Carving Coaster

This workshop will offer you the great opportunity to create your own wooden coaster taught by a local Buddhist sculptor at his studio. Lotus flowers have been used as a symbol of Buddhism, especially for the pedestals of Buddha statues, thus carving a lotus flower is a basic technique for Buddhist sculptors.

Yoshisada Ishihara
Buddhist statue artist

Yoshisada Ishihara has studied in Australia when high school. Back to Japan, he learned wood carving under Kiyosada Sunada since 1995, and established a studio in 2006. Yoshisada has won prefectural prizes several times.
